From Press Release
In our sport, recruiting showcases come and go. This inconsistency can create confusion about which events are worth attending. New England Top 150 has stayed elite and avoided the dilution many events experience by providing what players and college coaches want, an intimate environment that balances showcase games with college level drills. This helps college coaches evaluate your game and just as important, see how you respond to being coached.
By focusing on players with the right combination of academics and lacrosse; college coaches from top academic programs, such as NESCAC and Patriot schools, remain attracted to this invite-only “niche” event at Portsmouth Abbey, R.I. This identity and the longstanding relationships of it’s camp directors, provide consistency over 26 years and recognition in the coaching community as a truly premier recruiting camp.
2018 session dates: July 8-10 and July 11-13. Learn more and request an invite: http://www.netop150lax.com/
At ConnectLAX, we’re excited to partner with NE Top 150 to maximize player exposure through media, our digital coach book and film share.
We had a quick Q&A with Al Brown, one of NE Top 150 founders in 1983 and a legendary coach at Portsmouth Abbey, where the event is held. Here’s his insight into this camp and tips for players to perform at their best this summer.
1. NE Top 150 is one of the longest running and best recognized showcases in the country, what keeps so many players and college coaches coming back year after year?
Brown: “We have a “niche” of attracting student/athletes and college coaches that place an emphasis on academics and lacrosse. Top 150 provides a combination of teaching, playing and recruiting. Campers have an opportunity to improve their game and find the right fit for college.”
2. How has the location, venue and format of NE Top 150 helped drive its growth, its location is clearly central for a lot of college coaches?
Brown: “Our venue (Portsmouth Abbey School) provides easy access to fields, dorms, dining hall and a central meeting space. All are within a 5 minute walk. College coaches have access to all fields each session.”
3. Can you tell us a little about your application process and the network of HS and Club coaches you leverage in selecting players to attend?
Brown: “We have a strong network of schools/clubs whose athletes have found a college match through camp. The camp is small and allows athletes to meet and talk with coaches.”
4. What do you recommend players focus on when preparing for showcases and tips to stay loose while playing in front of a sideline of college coaches?
Brown: “Athletes need to rest and regenerate in between sessions. Eat rest, hydrate and play hard each session. Coaches are looking for good players who are also good teammates.”
5. What criteria do you recommend players and parents consider when evaluating which showcases or recruiting events to attend?
Brown: “Players and parents must have a vision of what they are looking for in the college experience. Our campers are looking to combine a great education and competitive lacrosse in college.”
6. What is your favorite thing about our sport? What drew you in? If you could change one thing about our sport, what would it be and why?
brown: “Lacrosse consistently offers a wide spectrum of athletes the opportunity to enjoy the game. We need to continually look at and modify rules and equipment to insure a safe experience for athletes.”
